Most entrepreneurs will tell you the Ebay era has come and gone and generally they are correct. Selling on Ebay has become extremely competitive as there have been so many individuals trying it out recently. Ebay US and UK especially are heavily saturated in most categories with competitors taking ridiculously small profit margins as they try to compete with one another. Looking overseas is more promising especially with the new EU countries where the Ebay rush is only starting. Anyone that can speak a foreign language should investigate the potential to sell products in other countries.
Of course we are not here to tell you Ebay is a no go, in fact there are still a few good ways to make money there. Anyone can purchase goods with the idea to resell them on Ebay but the real secret is to make your own products to sell. Now bare with us this is not as difficult as you might think. Decorative Items are amongst the most popular, after all anything hand made can be considered as art and for some reason there are always people in the world that want to buy art. Additionally, services are selling like hot cakes and are especially lucrative with their low operating costs.
Here at OC we are strong believers in products being able to sell themselves. If someone likes what you are selling they will buy it! The trick therefore is all in choosing that one product and service that will sell itself. This is the key not just on Ebay but in any business, pick a product that people will fall over themselves for and you wont go out of business. For this reason we strongly recommend you take several days in researching and choosing your product as choosing the wrong product can result in total failure no matter how must sweat and tears you put into you Ebay business. Always remember "fail to plan, plan to fail. You must be confident that you have a great product otherwise don't waste your time trying to sell it.
Choosing the right product won't be easy as you need to balance your creative abilities with desirable products. What can you make? Are you good at drawing, painting or modeling? Or do you have skills elsewhere that can be turned into a desirable product or service. Perhaps the good starting point is looking at what you enjoy and seeing if there is anything there that you could make a product or service out of.
Its not always easy to generate ideas so perhaps we can spark some ideas for you. Sculptures can be highly desirable. Can you sculpt out of wood, stone or any other materials? Paintings of particular items such as cats or dogs can be quite an effective niche. If you cant paint perhaps you can draw. Failing that there are all sorts of modeling possibilities out of clay, various metals or something unique like pencil or paperclip constructions. Just be creative.
There is nothing stopping you from expanding beyond Ebay, selling your product and service through your own site is easier then you might think especially if you follow our advice. The only real advantage of using Ebay is its large exposure to potential customers, of course along with this large exposure comes competition.
For those of you that have a product or service that you already sell through a website, you might want to use Ebay to market your site and product rather then sell it. This can be done through selling products for a large run time for the auction so that the product gets as much exposure as possible. You could even sell a few products at a loss to attract even more visitors. For best results include the URL of your website in the auction to attract visitors to buy directly from your site. On a similar note you can also use Ebay's classified listings to promote your products.
Whichever method you use to sell on Ebay always remember to test run the products first. If they don't sell do not pour hundreds of £, $ or € trying to make it work, move on to a new product instead.
